Foreword by John A. Zachman
(creator of the Zachman Framework for Enterprise Architecture TM)

We have the technology … We have the capability to build the world’s first Bionic Enterprise. Sound familiar? In the mid-1970s, the Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman thrilled television audiences as they used their bionic arms, legs, eyes, and ears to perform superhuman feats of strength, speed, and agility. Today, the Fourth Industrial Revolution is bringing us technologies that are rapidly becoming smarter, hyper-connected, hyper-aware, and able to perform similarly impressive feats in our daily lives and in the activities of companies, government, and society. Science fiction? Hardly.

The future of technology is human-centric design, driven by artificial intelligence that is increasingly empathetic to better serve humanity. However, we must still prepare for and anticipate the advent of Dark AI – a future sentient and synthetic intelligence that may arise as a digital mutation or intentional creation that will not have humanity’s best interest in mind. Dark AI may well lead to a series of AI wars – digital and physical battles of good vs. evil with humanity caught in the middle.

The key to the future is not simply in devising more amazing technology, but in evolving our own maturity and relationships to this technology; how we view it, use it and fuse with it in our daily lives; how we think about it, and even how it thinks about us. That is the essence of the Bionic Enterprise and a Bionic Society.

Many books discuss the impact and benefits of AI, robotics, and advanced technologies. This book shows how to implement and mature them through the Bionic Enterprise Framework© to build the intelligent Bionic Company, the Intelligent Bionic Society 5.0 and technologically enhanced Humans 2.0. Technologies are exhibiting Bionic Capabilities to merge machines and humans to help all of us achieve enhanced performance and thrive in the prosperity of connectedness. Today’s technologies are driving a global digital transformation, but the real benefit is not from digital transformation. It is continuous Bionic Transformation animated by evolving, generalized AI. Organizations must be designed for continuous transformation as the rate of change continues to increase.
"The concept of a Bionic Enterprise is a critical concept to prepare organizations for the digital future that awaits.”
- Mike J. Walker - Microsoft Corporation, Senior Director, Executive Director, Global Healthcare Lifesciences and Digital Strategy | Futurist | Emerging Technology Visionary | Best-Selling Author | Global Keynote Speaker
The Bionic Enterprise Framework© and methodology is blueprint for organizations to chart their course and level-up their maturity across the range of Bionic Capability Areas. The paradigm shift to this intelligent future requires companies to detect or even cause paradigm shifts within their eco-systems for strategic advantage. The framework informs development of a Bionic Strategy and roadmap, implementation of other essential ingredients for success including visionary leadership, the creative and innovative enterprise, and disruptive technologies. The enterprise of the future won’t build killer apps … it will become the killer app. The fusion of human activity and Bionic Technologies is transforming society, education, finance, industry, and the future of work and wealth.

Bionic Transformation requires organizational and cultural change and paradigm shifts to envision the future. The Bionic Enterprise will be ubiquitous. It will connect with us at home, in our cars, at work, on our mobile devices and even provide digital twin avatars to act in our stead as we choose. A Bionic Enterprise will apply new types of capital of the Bionic Age: network capital, behavioral capital, cognitive capital. Strategic advantage will come to companies geared for continuous transformation to combat stagnation and obsolescence. The future of this Bionic Transformation includes advanced, immersive, and empathetic human interfaces with Bionic Agents and infrastructure that blur the line between cyberspace and the physical world. New hyper-intelligent, human-centric companies and societies will evolve with the Bionic Enterprise Framework© as the blueprint. The Bionic Enterprise provides the vision, strategy, and framework. We have the technology.
“…a framework for today’s enterprises to leap into the bionic future.”
- Nikhil Deshpande - Intel Corporation, PhD, Senior Director | Security | AI | High Performance Computing & Graph Analytics | New Product Development
Twelve years ago, I began an incredible journey into the future. The field of Enterprise Architecture is not about drawing diagrams and blueprints and models. It is about transformation. It is about changing the world - one enterprise at a time. My journey began with a choice – a choice to skip dinner with some colleagues and stay in my hotel room. I was at an enterprise architecture conference in San Antonio, Texas. While my friends went out to dinner and to take a tour back in history to the Alamo, I gazed at my laptop and began a journey into the future of technology, business, society, and everyday life in our smart homes, smart cars, smart offices, and smart cities.

I began to think about the convergence of AI and AI-driven technologies in robotics, automation, autonomous cars and spacecraft, and the intelligent society of the future. The Bionic Enterprise was born. During my journey I met and shared ideas with some incredible thinkers - John A. Zachman - the "father" of Enterprise Architecture penned the Foreword to the book. J.D. Meier - the Director of Innovation, Agile Practices, and Digital Transformation at Microsoft became a valued voice along the way and many, many others engaged with me and my ideas in correspondence, video-cons, and lengthy phone calls. The good news was, that I found out that I wasn't crazy - or maybe we all were!

Maybe it was something I had for dinner that night, but the neurons began firing in many directions. I began to see the intersection of my many years in the space program, and a passion for AI that began with the HAL 9000 computer in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. But simply using technology wasn’t the future. It was the idea that to achieve greater performance and more desirable outcomes and user experiences we needed to fuse with the technology in every activity.

AI isn’t coming. It’s already here, but it needs a roadmap – a framework of capabilities about how to make it more useful – more beneficial – more empathetic in our personal lives, school, work, government, and society in general. As I looked back on my career and its evolution from AI programming and space shuttle missions to the past 25 years spent in enterprise architecture and transformation, I suddenly had a spark about a childhood favorite – the TV show The Six Million Dollar Man and its spinoff – the Bionic Woman. What if intelligence like HAL was fused to human endeavors of all types? What if technology enhanced our abilities and performance to achieve better effects and outcomes as an extension of ourselves? More immersive experiences and interfaces could be there with us at the most intricate and intimate levels of human activity in the same way that bionic limbs, eyes, and hearing were fused to the human anatomy of the bionic man and woman.

What if there was a framework that addressed the human perspective of an organization, the technology perspective, and that thing in the middle – that intersection – the fusion perspective? The Bionic Fusion Strand is the architectural design concept that fuses Bionic Effects achieved by AI, machine learning and other related Bionic Technologies to the human experience. That was it. That was the nexus of all the thoughts spinning in my head that evening. It was the Bionic Enterprise and the framework to guide its design and evolution.
“I find Kevin Brett's vision of the future enterprise fascinating.”
- John A. Zachman (Creator of the Zachman Framework for Enterprise Architecture TM)
The book is finally finished, and the journey is really just beginning. Numerous reviewers have concurred that this convergence and maturation is simply where technology, industry, and society are headed, but the Bionic Enterprise Framework© is the essential reference model and the roadmap to take us there.

Don’t read the entire book start to finish. There are chapters for many players in the organization: Paradigm Shifts, The Creative Enterprise, Visionary Leadership, Bionic Architectures, Organizational Transformation, and more. Just know that as enterprise architects we must look at all of it and provide plans and strategies to achieve it – hence the 762 pages!

Begin your Bionic Transformation journey!
